JANE GRIPES ABOUT SHADOW THE HEDGEHOG IN THE ARCHIE COMIC BOOKS
Lots of disapproval, personal stories, and unhappiness under the cut, so if you like the way Shadow is portrayed in Archie feel free to ignore!
A very interesting read! I agree with quite a bit of it, actually—for example, the whole 30-Years-Later arc had such awful character portrayals (with a lot of characters, actually) that I couldn’t bring myself to even read the whole thing.
That said, I treat it as more of an AU kind of deal. It’s not my cup of tea, but hey—like you said, Shadow of the Archie Comics is different from Shadow of the games, so I’m willing to give a bit on that.
Anyhoot, I’m a fan of Shadow’s when it comes to his game appearances. My only quibble is that he’s very difficult to portray in various scenarios. Shadow’s character has undergone quite a few transformations throughout his appearances, from his initial vengeance-oriented personality in SA2B to the kind-of-dorky-tough-guy-lone-wolf in Sonic Heroes to the literal SPECTRUM of personality shifts he can undergo throughout his titular game and EVEN to the dark and brooding kind of role he plays in ‘06. Unfortunately, due to the very nature of his character (the entire point of his own story was to find out who he was because he didn’t even know what he wanted), Shadow’s personality is often misinterpreted, even by the people who write for his character. He’s had to face a lot of character development, whether or not he wanted it, and it’s made him very confused, so it’s no surprise that his personality is inconsistent. It just makes it very frustrating for anybody who’s followed his various incarnations throughout their stories because the question remains:
Who IS Shadow?
Good question!
The biggest consistencies I’ve seen with Shadow is that he is introspective, thinks before he acts, prefers to keep quiet unless spurred, and a very compassionate person way down deep inside. His biggest and most consistent flaws are his unwillingness to trust others, his subdued arrogance, and him just being a consistent downer.
Personally, I think his portrayal in 06 is the closest we can get to a complete idea of who Shadow is. He has a strong sense of purpose, never stops until he reaches his goal, keeps quiet about a lot of things, and is very intelligent overall, connecting the dots at a faster rate than quite a few other characters (cough cough Silver cough cough Sonic cough).
Though of course, when it comes right down to it, while everyone has a different interpretation, he still has to keep his core traits; introspection, silence, compassion, arrogance, and purposeful action.
At least, that’s how I see it!

…So I almost wonder if the reason why Mephiles specifically shows up to Shadow and Silver and not to Sonic has something to do with Sonic’s Impenetrable Optimism Shield? I mean, it was established verbatim in Sonic Unleashed that Sonic basically has the ability to resist the power of godlike beings without much trouble. I would consider Dark Gaia and Solaris to be on about the same level, and Mephiles is a step down from that being only half of Solaris.

My grandpa has Alzheimer’s so he has no idea who my grandma is but everyday for the last three or four months he brings her in flowers from their garden and asks her to run away with him and be his wife and everyday she says she already is and everyday the smile my grandpa gets on his face is the most beautiful heartfelt thing I have ever seen.
